NEED A GRANT, LOAN OR SCHOLARSHIP TO GET INTO TRADES?

Sunday, August 16, 2015

Check out this fantastic article by the Journal of Commerce.  It is packed with resources for funding.  Everything from the new Canada Apprenticeship Loan that can provide individuals registered in a Red Seal program with $4,000 in interest-free funds to up to $16,400 in non-repayable grants for studying in-demand trades such as heavy duty mechanic, carpentry, sheet metal, gas fitting, heavy equipment operation, iron work, and industrial mechanics.

I have met women working in ALL the trades named above in the the last month alone. GO FOR IT GIRLS, YOU CAN DO IT.

This picture was taking three months after I completed my class 1 driver training course a decade ago.  It was a tough way to start; snow plowing the Gold River Highway when it was snowing so hard sometimes I coudn't tell where the middle of the road was, but I was instantly making $25 an hour.  If I can do it, so can you!

WOMEN IN SHIPBUILDING, WHY NOT?

Tuesday, February 17, 2015

This video was published on You Tube today.  Irving Shipbuilding on the east coast has parterned with Women Unlimited (another fabulous organization in Canada helping promote women in trades) and a local college to get women involved in shipbuilding. Sounds like another opportunity for us west coast women as well, and there are shipbuilding yards in Vancouver and Victora.  Here is a link to BC's Seaspan apprentice information.

A MILLION DOLLARS FOR WOMEN IN TRADES

Friday, February 6, 2015

On January 22 the Canadian government committed a million dollars for women in trades in Alberta. The funds will go to Women Building Futures.  WFB is an amazing organization that has been helping women get training and work placement in the trades since 1998. This news story goes on to say that the company TFL Industrial worked with WFB in the past and did a successful 8 week program training women in welding. From this program, 7 of the 8 women who graduated are still working at the company today.

Being from Vancouver Island I am all for local opportunities and development, but sometimes we need to work together as Canadians to build a stronger all-gender trades workforce so here is a link to this company in Alberta that is empowering women and here are some of the job opportunies they may have for you.
